Community rules
Signal is small on purpose. These are the few rules that keep it small and safe. The full community rules are in the linked legal document.
Community Rules
Last updated: 23 August 2026
Status is built for short and safe contacts with people nearby. These rules help keep the app useful, calm, and safe for everyone.
The basic rule
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
By using Status, you agree to follow these rules and not use the app to harm other people.
Who can use Status
Status is intended for users 18 and older only.
You must not create or use an account on behalf of a minor, or transfer your account to another person.
Posts
- Be brief. One or two words, or a short phrase, is ideal. Status is not designed for long posts or running a microblog.
- Be contextual. Post only when it makes sense for people nearby. Do not use Status for constant or intrusive posting.
- Safety first. Do not publish your exact home address, apartment number, parking spot, workplace, or other information that could reveal your or someone else's precise location.
- Only share what you have the right to share. Do not publish other people's personal data, photos, or other information without the appropriate right or permission.
👋 Contacts and reactions
- 👋 is just a greeting. Sending 👋 does not mean consent to further communication and does not obligate the recipient to reply.
- Once is enough. Do not send repeated reactions to the same person if they do not respond.
- No mass reactions. Do not use 👋 to contact dozens of users in a row.
- Respect a refusal. If someone does not respond, has blocked you, or has asked you to stop contacting them, do not try to reach them through Status again.
Harassment and location
Status must not be used to harass people.
Prohibited:
- using the app to track, stalk, intimidate, or persistently search for a specific person;
- attempting to determine the precise location of another user without their consent;
- publishing or distributing someone else's home address, workplace, or other data that could reveal a person's precise location;
- using information from Status to harm, threaten, or interfere with another person's private life;
- creating new accounts or using other means to bypass a block and continue unwanted contact.
If someone has blocked you, do not try to circumvent the block.
Prohibited content and behavior
In Status, the following are prohibited:
- Threats and violence. Threats of harm, calls for violence, or content aimed at intimidating other people.
- Harassment and bullying. Intrusive, demeaning, or threatening behavior toward another person.
- Doxxing. Publishing other people's personal data without permission, especially information that could put a person at risk.
- Blackmail and extortion.
- Hate and discrimination. Content that demeans or expresses hostility toward people based on their protected characteristics.
- Sexual exploitation. Any content or behavior involving sexual exploitation, coercion, or sexual violence.
- Sexual content involving minors. Such content is prohibited under any circumstances.
- Fraud and deception. Attempts to obtain money, data, account access, or other benefits by deception.
- Impersonation. Do not use Status to deceive users about your identity.
- Illegal goods and services. Do not use Status to offer, sell, or promote illegal goods or services.
Spam and advertising
Status is not an advertising platform.
Prohibited:
- mass-posting identical or similar messages;
- using the app to mass-recruit users;
- posting intrusive advertising or commercial offers;
- using automated means to post or react;
- attempting to artificially increase the reach of posts or account activity.
Blocking and safety
Block, don't argue.
If another user behaves unacceptably, you can block them. After blocking, do not try to continue contact through another account.
If you encounter a rule violation, use "Report" on the user or post card.
If a situation feels dangerous or there is an immediate threat to life or health, contact the appropriate emergency services.
Account
- One account must belong to one person.
- Do not sell, buy, or transfer accounts.
- Do not use someone else's account.
- Do not create new accounts to bypass restrictions or blocks.
You are responsible for actions taken with your account.
What we do about violations
We may take action if we believe a user has violated these rules, created risk for other users, or is using Status improperly.
Depending on the circumstances, we may:
- remove a post or other content;
- issue a warning;
- temporarily restrict specific features;
- temporarily block an account;
- permanently block an account.
We consider the nature and severity of the violation, the circumstances, and any prior violations.
Serious violations may result in immediate blocking without prior warning.
We may also take action when necessary to protect users, the service, or comply with the law.
If you believe a decision was wrong
If your content was removed or your account access was restricted, you may use the in-app appeal mechanism, if available for the relevant decision.
When reviewing an appeal, we may consider the circumstances of the specific situation and the available information about the violation.
How to report
If you see a post or behavior that violates these rules:
open the user or post card → "Report" → select a reason.
Do not engage in conflict with the user. If needed, use "Block" first.
We review violation reports and may take appropriate action.
Changes to these rules
We may update these rules from time to time to reflect changes to Status, legal requirements, and new safety risks.
For significant changes, we may notify you through the app or by other available means.
